The Background Story:

The OM works in partnership as a consultant and ambassador for distance learning provider MLA College in Plymouth (part of the BAU Global International University Group and a partner of Plymouth University) to open up high quality, supported, online distance learning degree level programmes for maritime professionals and superyacht crew.

The final year BSc Hons degree and MSc programme in Sustainable Maritime Operations is designed to be accessible and completely flexible around the demanding working schedules of maritime professionals and in particular, superyacht crew.

With marine and maritime sustainability, a subject area of huge importance in all aspects of the industry, combined with the colleges close links with the United Nations and its sustainability goals; the course represents an ideal steppingstone for crew to broaden their theoretical and operational knowledge, whilst also allowing them to translate their onboard experience and qualifications to something more tangible in shore-based employment.

Your CoC’s Count:

We believe that there should be no barriers to learning, superyacht crew have extraordinary jobs, with pressures and responsibilities rarely encountered in more “normal” shore-based employment. Many crew however, although having achieved career success, do not consider themselves “academic”.

We value the onboard experience and CoC’s of non-academic qualified crew and have created a unique access route to Higher Education study. We invite applications based on CoC’s and an individual’s professional and life experience as a viable alternative for crew who do not have the benefit of post eighteen education.

Currently, this ground-breaking opportunity is open to any crew member who has achieved their OOW/EOOW/Chief Mate/Chief Engineer/Masters CoC 3000 Yacht or unlimited. If your qualifications differ but you would like to discuss entry, please get in touch.

“Providing options for crew to develop their life and professional skillsets, empowering them to real excellence in their onboard roles, whilst gaining valuable careers beyond the industry when that time comes.

Emma Baggett Director of The OM

“My purpose and desires in life are adjusting and I can see myself wanting to take the step and move to a shore-based life within the next 5 years. To achieve this as seamlessly and successfully as possible, I understand that I need to improve my knowledge base, increase my relevant qualifications, and take positive steps to achieve it.”
